Elena Álvarez — Independent
Awakened Freelancer and Survivor
Ask her why she kept driving toward the building instead of away from it, and she will tell you the truth: nobody made her. That is the part she has never gotten over.

Background
Elena Álvarez went looking for the hidden world. She insists on that version over the alternative, because the alternative would let her off the hook.
By day she was a freelance journalist covering urban displacement: city policy, gentrification economics, the slow violence of institutional indifference. She was good at it. On her own time and her own money, she was also keeping a list: demolition orders that stalled for reasons nobody would put in writing, missing persons cases closed too quickly and too neatly, a block in Gary where three arson investigations reached three different conclusions and none of them mentioned the fourth fire. Six years of a list is not a hobby, whatever she told her friends it was.
The building in South Chicago was on that list. She chose it herself, drove out, photographed it, and in the third-floor hallway caught something on film the images would not resolve, no matter how many times she went back through the file afterward.
Two months later she had a partial picture of what the building was, what was using it, and what the stalled condemnation had actually covered up, along with two Corruption points from encounters she had not been remotely equipped for and a contact list built for city hall that turned out to be useless for anything else.
She rebuilt her sources from nothing: the Latchkey Archive through a relic misidentification, the Black Road through a resource trail, the Lyncean Office briefly and awkwardly through a case where her paperwork was better than theirs. She has never signed on with any of them. She does not want a boss. She wants to understand the world she is now walking through, and she wants to do something about who it is eating.
She will tell you plainly that she is not a trained operative. She is a journalist who has survived enough bad nights to build a working skill set out of them, and she carries that fact as both humility and a stubborn kind of pride.

No Faction Passive. Elena Álvarez operates as an Independent. She has no institutional backing, no formal resources, and no passive that activates on credentials or authority. What she has instead is flexibility: she is not bound by any faction's rules of engagement, she can be in rooms that no official body can enter without triggering protocol, and her contact network crosses faction lines in ways that official members cannot replicate.
Talents
Pressure Holds (Iron Will Tree, Tier 2, Chapter Six): Once per session, Elena may ignore the mechanical effects of a failed Composure check. She still fails. She does not break. She has survived situations she had no training for, on improvisation and refusal.
Contact Network (Signature Ability): Elena has built an informal web of sources across multiple factions and the mundane world: a former Latchkey archivist, a sympathetic Lyncean analyst, three Black Road contacts who respect her research, two city hall reporters who do not know what they are actually covering. Once per session, she may reach out to her network for information, a resource, or an access point. The GM determines availability, but the contact exists and is genuinely trying to help.
Adaptive (Signature Ability): Elena reads a room fast and adjusts. When she finds herself in a situation she has no formal training for, an entity encounter type she has not faced, a faction's internal procedure she is improvising through, she may make an Average Savvy + Perception check before acting. On success, she identifies the most useful thing she can do with what she has, and the GM provides one actionable insight that she could reasonably derive from observation.
The Photo (Signature Ability): Elena documents everything. Her camera is a tool, a habit, and occasionally a weapon. Once per scene, she may produce photographic documentation of something she witnessed, regardless of whether she announced she was shooting. This evidence is usable in investigation procedures and, in ambiguous scenes, may constitute proof that something occurred when other evidence is absent or disputed.
Equipment
- Leather jacket — worn-in, practical, has saved her from two situations that required sliding across a floor
- Camera — professional-grade compact digital; she shoots on instinct and reviews carefully; she has images she has not published and does not plan to
- Notebook — waterproof cover, dense handwriting; her notes on Hollow entities and faction behavior constitute an informal field guide that no faction has managed to get their hands on
- Inherited medal — her grandmother's Saint Christopher, which Elena treats as a personal talisman without formal consecration; whether it provides any mechanical protection is between Elena and whatever listens
- Light Pistol — small, concealed, thoroughly legal; the two times she has drawn it, a gun turned out not to be the answer, and she carries it now out of habit rather than logic
- Concealed knife — fixed blade, not iron; she carries it because it makes her feel like she has an answer to something
GM Notes
Do not build combat scenes around Elena; build access scenes. She gets the party into rooms official channels cannot enter, and she reads the human side of a case better than most trained operatives in this book.
She is a research and access asset who can hold her own long enough to get out, not a field operative in the Black Road or Order sense. Play to investigation, navigation of mundane systems, and the human-facing parts of a case.
Corruption 3 puts her within reach of the first meaningful threshold. She knows things. She has seen things. The accumulation shows. If she is going to be a recurring figure, decide now what pushes her toward 5, and remember she has no institutional structure to catch her when it happens.
Her notebook is a potential prize for anyone who wants it.
I could have filed the photographs and gone home. I have thought about that a great deal, and I would still do it the same way. Elena Álvarez, The Hollow
