Background

Isaiah Boone has been on the Black Road for thirteen years. He came to it sideways, not by choosing a vocation. At twenty-six he was working night security at an industrial site in East St. Louis when something came through the fence that the company's incident report later called a large animal. The report was wrong. He knows what he saw, what it did to the site supervisor on duty with him, and what actually stopped it: not the shotgun he was carrying, but the salt rounds he had loaded as a joke, because his cousin had sworn that was the right ammunition for exactly this situation. He had laughed at his cousin. He stopped laughing fast.

He called his cousin. His cousin called someone. Three days later, a woman he had never met pulled up in a truck with an Oklahoma plate, handed him a laminated card with a phone number, and told him to call when he was ready. He waited two weeks, being a deliberate man, and then he called.

The Black Road trained him well. He ranks among the better field hunters in his regional network: good with iron, methodical about research, the man people ask for by name when a situation is serious. He has worked alone, in pairs, and in mixed-faction operations, adapting his approach each time without losing what makes him effective: reading a situation correctly before committing, and committing fully once he has read it.

Two rules hold everything else together. Know what you are going into before you go in. Get the people who are not equipped for this out before anything else. Everything past that is improvisation, and he is good at improvisation.

Skills

Faction Passive — Kill It Right (The Black Road): When Isaiah has confirmed a specific entity's weakness through research, prior encounter, or Kill It Right's knowledge-sharing network, his attacks exploiting that weakness add one Boon die to the pool, and any Supernatural Defense the entity possesses is bypassed for that attack. Confirmed weakness must be genuinely established; this does not apply to assumptions or guesses, only to information he has verified. The Black Road network allows him to access the community's collective knowledge about entity weaknesses, reducing research time on any entity profile the Road has encountered before by one step.

Talents

Incorruptible (Iron Will Tree, Tier 4, Chapter Six): When Boone would gain 1 Corruption from an environmental or accidental source, he makes a Willpower check at Average. On success, he does not gain it. Thirteen years on the Road and he is still carrying only two.

Weak Point (Monster Weakness Tree, Tier 1, Chapter Six): On a successful Monster Lore check, Boone identifies one specific physical vulnerability: a joint, an organ, a place where the creature's natural defenses are thinner than elsewhere.

Three Exits (Fieldcraft Tree, Tier 2, Chapter Six): When entering any new location, Boone immediately identifies three viable escape routes without a check, and may communicate them to allies. He does this before he does anything else.

Mutual Defense (Road Skills Tree, Tier 4, Chapter Six): Boone invokes the Road's informal obligation to help. Another hunter-network NPC cannot refuse assistance without a cost to their standing, even if they dislike him personally. A number of them do.

Equipment

• Leather jacket — waxed canvas option available for fieldwork; gear-worn, not new; carries two interior pockets that most people would not find
• Shotgun — pump-action; two ammunition types maintained separately: standard shells and iron-core shells; he loads iron-core as the default in any situation where entity contact is anticipated
• Salt tin — road standard; loose salt in a sealed tin plus salt rounds for the shotgun; he restocks every trip
• Silver rounds — Light Pistol, iron-core in primary magazine, silver-core in secondary; he knows which entities respond to which
• Iron-edge knife — fixed blade, iron-edge quality; his primary close-range option; balanced, not decorative
• Crowbar — in the truck; he has used it for entry, for bracing, and twice for direct application; he does not list it as a weapon because he is not a man who leads with a crowbar
• Marked road map — current operational region; annotated in his handwriting with site locations, known threat history, and safe approach routes
• Light Pistol — standard frame, iron-core primary magazine; secondary weapon; reliable
