Yara Castillo
Composure Initiative: 6 Corruption: 1 Sanctity: Fully Effective
Background
Yara Castillo was sixteen when a Minor-tier entity entered her body at what was later identified as a Stage 3 Open Wound: a house in a Phoenix subdivision her family had moved into eight months earlier. The possession lasted three days before a Black Road operative named Marcus Webb performed the expulsion. She remembers all three days. Merciful Dissonance never took, whether because of Awakened Blood she did not know she carried or because of what the possession did to whatever should have protected her from remembering. She stopped trying to determine which one it was years ago.
She is thirty-three now. She found the Kept community at eighteen, slowly and carefully, the way people in her situation find each other: by noticing something specific in how a stranger answered a question she had learned never to ask directly. Four years passed before she went into field work. She spent them understanding what had happened to her first. Then she went back in.
Her value in the field is embodied, not theoretical: she knows the inside of a possession from three days of direct experience at sixteen, processed and catalogued across seventeen years since. The Black Road respects this enough that three of its hunters trust her read on possession dynamics over a scholar with four times her academic credentials.
Her Corruption sits at 1, a low and stable residual mark left by the possession rather than active spiritual compromise: the trace of something that departed and left a record of itself in leaving. She manages it the way she manages everything, practically, and moves on.
The mark also makes her visible. Spiritually sensitive entities detect the trace before they detect anyone else in the room, and she has built her entire operational approach around that fact.

Charter Trait — Survivor's Read (The Kept): The Kept have been through what the cases are trying to prevent. Once per scene, a Kept character may declare direct experiential knowledge of a specific type of threat on a successful Willpower check (Average ), identifying one thing that research alone could not reveal: a behavioral pattern, a procedural detail, a warning sign that only appears from the inside.
For Yara, this check is automatic. No roll required. She carries residual marking from her original encounter, and the marking provides this knowledge as a permanent function of having been present in a way that left a record. It costs her something to access. It is also, in the context of field work, one of the things it gives back.
Residual Marking: Spiritually sensitive entities can detect Yara's marking before detecting other investigators in the same space. High-tier entities may fixate on her before engaging others. Lower-tier entities sometimes exhibit behavioral irregularities in her presence: attraction, recognition, response patterns that suggest they perceive her as categorically distinct from unaffected investigators. She is aware of this. She has designed her operational approach around it: she knows what it means when something notices her first, and she uses that window.
Talents
The Inside Knowledge — Rank 2 (Signature Ability, Chapter Eight): Yara's Survivor's Read provides automatic threat intelligence on possession dynamics, possessed individuals, and entity behavioral patterns without a check. At Rank 2, this extends to possession aftermath: she can read what a possession has left behind, what the entity wanted, what it was searching for, how long it operated, what it found or failed to find, from a brief direct examination of a person who has been possessed. This is not a check. It is recognition. She has been where they have been. She knows the shape of it.
Marked Target (Signature Ability): Yara has learned to use her spiritual visibility as an operational tool. Once per scene, she may deliberately attract an entity's attention to herself, drawing its focus away from another character performing a time-sensitive action: placing a binding, completing a ritual, speaking a true name fragment, reaching a possessed person's surfacing consciousness. The entity's next action targets Yara rather than its intended target. She is, in this moment, bait on purpose. She knows exactly what she is doing. She has been practicing it for eleven years.
Seventeen Months (Signature Ability): Named for the duration of her own recovery period. Once per session, when another character is breaking under entity pressure, showing signs of possession infiltration, spiritual overwhelm, or sustained entity influence, Yara may provide direct support. Her presence and the specific words she finds reduce the difficulty of the affected character's next resistance check by 1 step. She does not explain what she is doing. She does not need to. The words are specific and come from a place that formal training does not reach, because she needed them herself at seventeen months out, and no one had them for her, and she found them anyway.
Equipment
- Field jacket, practical and dark, with no insignia of any kind; she has been with the Kept long enough to know that insignia are a liability
- Short iron bar: a piece of rebar, approximately thirty centimeters; technically not a weapon; functions as an improvised weapon with Iron quality for all supernatural mechanics; she has carried it since she was nineteen and will not discuss its origin other than to say it works
- Hip flask: water, always; consecrated when access to ordained clergy permits; she asks for consecrated water whenever a case brings her near a church, and the clergy she asks have learned to simply pour it
- Journal: pocket-sized, current in a series going back fifteen years; not a diary; a working reference of observed entity behaviors, what worked in specific cases, what the entity wanted in each possession she has assessed, patterns that have recurred; it is the most operationally useful document in any room she is in
- A river stone, smooth and gray, carried in her left jacket pocket; she was holding it when the expulsion completed, when Marcus Webb said it's done, you're clear; it has not left arm's reach since, and she keeps the reason to herself
GM Notes
Yara turns the work personal in a way no faction training can manufacture, not because of what happened to her but because of what she did with it afterward: she understood it, catalogued it, and went back in. Play her as functional, skilled, and specific. The backstory sits in every room she enters, since she was possessed at sixteen and remembers all of it, but she leads with competence, not history.
Her automatic Survivor's Read makes her the fastest diagnostic tool for possession cases in any team; she tells the table what is happening before a Discernment check would. Play it as exactly what it is: pattern recognition built from direct experience at a level no other investigator has.
Treat the residual marking as a running liability. For every session Yara is present, decide what entity encounters she is in, and for each encounter with a spiritually sensitive entity above Minor tier, decide whether and how it notices her. High-tier entities may shift priorities because of it. Named entities that have crossed her path before may recognize her specifically. The Hollow-Mouthed, in the season blueprint's Case 6, knows her marking if she has appeared in prior cases, and will name it. Design that scene.
Her Corruption at 1 is stable by her own effort, not by accident: seventeen years of exposure at this level leaves a mark, and she has made peace with the number staying where it is. If it starts climbing through play, treat that as a real character turn and let the table feel the weight of it.
The Seventeen Months talent is what makes her most valuable when someone else at the table is breaking. She hands them words that come from having needed those exact words herself once, with no one there to offer them.
I know what it wants. I know what it says when it thinks no one is listening. I know because it said it to me, and I was still there when it finished. Yara Castillo, The Hollow
